East Lancs Prostate Cancer Support Group July Newsletter Now Available

With Prostate Cancer effecting 36,000 men in the UK and being a disease that is often embarrassing to talk about, never mind being diagnosed; support groups for those diagnosed with the disease are an extremely important tool in the fight against the disease.

Kath QuinnKath Quinn, a CWU Union Safety Rep based in Blackburn and a key supporter of the NW BTU Health & Safety Co-ord, continues to provide Unionsafety with regular updates as to the activities of one of the North West’s most active support groups - The East Lancs Prostate Cancer Support Group.

The East Lancs Prostate Cancer Support Group are a happy, supportive and upbeat group of local people who know about prostate cancer. A friendly organisation dedicated to offering support to men who have had or who are experiencing the effects of this potentially life threatening disease; they are very active in providing those attending group meetings with the latest and most up to date information on the disease.

Their July 2013 newsletter exemplifies some of the great work they are doing, and highlights some of their activities, which last month included a presentation from Dr Dr Omi Parikh, Consultant Clinical Oncologist for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

However, he did not have prostate cancer cells in his Prostate and he could have had monitoring instead of drastic action. Unfortunately the way the Media sensationalise news to sell papers can make people very frightened. She said that professional people trained in Prostate Cancer were the correct people to discuss these matters with.

It also includes the news that Sir Michael Parkinson has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and an article quoting him as saying: 'I Am Not Frightened Of It'!

Plus news that a new fund (Radiotherapy Innovation Fund) gives around 5,800 more cancer patients access to advanced radiotherapy treatment every year through state-of-the-art forms of radiotherapy.

Such support groups are so important for those who are suffering from this terrible disease, and remind us all that with the right kind of treatment following early detection, sufferers of the condition can still have fulfilling and active lives.
